At camp, we always talk about how there are so many different ways to praise God- worship, art, relationships, guitar, singing, acting, or paddling a canoe. And the cool thing is, God loves and appreciates EVERY way we praise Him. This concept was truly reinforced for me in my life with a few campers this summer. There was a camper who absolutely loved to sing and dance and clap. For every song, she was the loudest. It amazed me to see how free she was. She didn’t care who was around her or how she sounded- all that mattered was that she could praise our God. Another camper had a different mindset. She liked the songs, but her real appreciation was for the outdoors. On Tuesday nights, we always take campers to Outpost for worship, to experience a little bit of God’s creation. That is exactly what this camper and I did. We walked around the meadow admiring the grasshoppers. She would marvel at their differences and their talent of hopping.
People think that, as counselors, we are teaching the campers... In reality, these campers are teaching us. I’ve been reminded to appreciate the differences in everyone and everything. It’s amazing what a few days, a few weeks, a few summers at camp can do for a life.
