The first week of the summer, I had a group of junior high confirmation campers. Because it was my first week as a counselor, I was a little bit nervous. It seemed like a big undertaking to go into a summer where you are always watched and always looked up to. There is a lot of responsibility, and I was praying that God would work through me and give me the words that I needed to say to help the campers understand that God loves them so much, and that He is always there with them. When it came time for me to share a devotion for the night, I looked through the list I came across one of my favorites, entitled “Einstein.” I decided to share this devotional. It talks about a young student that proves to his professor that God did not create evil but that evil is only the absence of God’s love in the world. At the end of the story, it turns out that the young student’s name was Albert Einstein. When I read this story, the campers were extremely interested. They were silent when I said who the young student had been. After the story was done, we talked about how much God truly loves us, and as they talked it seemed like that had been moved by the story and they really understood that God’s love is like light in the world, and that His love can and does defeat evil here on earth. It was so cool to see the Holy Spirit working through the campers before my very eyes. It really showed me that all the things we do are according to God’s will, because that day the Holy Spirit used me to help those campers and to show them God’s light and love. I thank God for my experiences and for giving us such amazing campers, and for sending His Holy Spirit as our advocate to give us strength and peace of mind throughout our endeavors.
